I love this photo showing the start of the 1963 ATCC at Mallala, with second-fastest qualifier Ern Abbott (Clem Smith alongside was third fastest) matching Jane's Jaguar from pole position when the flag dropped. Jane and Abbott ran away from the rest of the pack with the Valiant giving nothing away to the Jaguar. It was only when Abbott's drums started to overheat (Mallala was very tough on brakes) that he was forced to back off and settle for second. It was a 'valiant' effort though. Imagine if he'd won!
