Back when the theory was 'to be thrown clear' Re the 1800, I have a vague recollection of BMC questioning the ADR requiring a collapsible steering column. Their logic was that the upright column and the-behind- the-engine rack of the Mini/1100/1800 made a collapsible column redundant..
Skylark - you're right about the mooted ADRs at the time, when just after the HK Holden featured the collapsible column, state governments came up with all sorts of ideas, such as universal bumper heights and so on. A collapsible column on all the transverse BMC cars wouldn't have worked because the bus-driver's angle. In theory, the steering wheel would have tilted forwards and through the windscreen, rather than back into the driver. The badly smacked Maxi pic represents the real world situation rather than the head-on into a barrier as they did 50 years ago.
