AAACV8's observation that "a sports car is not supposed to traverse deserts but they did" reminded me of an MG Midget in the 1968 London to Sydney Marathon crewed by John Sprinzel/Roy Fidler. Being the smallest car in the field, the only space available for the auxiliary fuel tank was on the roof! It was in the hunt for the coveted privateer’s trophy until a front hub failed in outback NSW, on the penultimate day of the event (below). I wonder how many Dakar or Sterrato owners would know about this chapter of off-road sports car history?
