Those 4WD developments by BMC and Leyland Australia make for some interesting reading. From my experiences as a teenager the 2WD Moke was a pretty capable off-roader when fitted with the larger 13-inch wheels of the Aussie version. The ground clearance wasn't too bad then and if you placed your front wheels accurately when driving over rocky terrain or powering through creeks etc it was amazing how far those things could go. The Aussie crew of Hans Tholstrup and John Crawford entered a Moke in the 1977 London to Sydney Rally in 1977, which was backed b Coca-Cola and powered by a 1275cc Cooper S engine. The little Moke outlasted many other cars to finish 35th after covering 30,000 km in 30 days. They were pretty darn good in the rough stuff.
