My Mk 1 1800 had a large rubber diaphragm stretched in the base of the seat with a pad of different density foam rubber on top of that. Comfortable then, and still not bad 50 years later. They did away with the diaphragm and used a metal pan for the later Mark IIs. Still just as good and lasts longer.
