I used to keep the spare wheel in the deep well, along with tools and the jack, and cover it with a piece of specially cut masonite and then put the boot mat over that. These model Chev/Pontiacs were prone to develop rust in the boot well, because many had been used as speedboat tow cars in the 1970s/80s and the long rear end would be immersed in water at the boat ramp and never allowed to properly drain.
