DrJohn, you mentioned Armstrong-Siddeley with their Automatic gearboxes, but the Manumatic, made by AP (Automotive Products) was also featured in the Sapphire 236. It was an expensive option for the 1.5 litre BMC and Rootes family cars such as the Austin A55 Cambridge, Morris Oxford, ZB MG Magnette, Wolseley 15/50 and Hillman Minx. It was overly complicated and thus unreliable – so much so that owners could have their cars converted back to a manual box at no cost. Apparently a very low mileage Manumatic Oxford has been discovered in a shed. The owners are very reluctant to drive it anyway as it is the sole survivor. Rootes had a similar system called Easidrive with the same results – maybe the unreliability and extra cost put British motorists off the idea of two-pedal motoring for a couple of decades! I don’t remember too many cars with autos when I worked in London in the ‘70s, maybe the odd Minimatic, also made by AP, and of course any DAF with their wonderful Variomatic. Borg-Warner eventually developed their 35 for smaller capacity engines of about 1600 cc and upward. This was found in a plethora of cars including Jaguars, AMC Ramblers, Falcons, the HB Torana, MGBs, Leyland P76 and later Valiants.
