Straight up, my thoughts went to Daewoo and Daihatsu, but both brands offered fairly basic cars and have been absent at a branding level in Australia for around about ten years. GM Daewoo has in fact been reinvented as GM Korea and the company's manufacturing still turns up here in the form of Holden branded product, whilst Daihatsu - best known I reckon for the three and four cylinder Charade line of small cars - has been absorbed into the Toyota monolith. Of a similar time frame, circa 2006, one item referred to by "Motown1" deserves mention, in the Mitsubishi 380 sedan and another, almost forgotten, is the slightly older Toyota Avalon sedan ... I've been told by more than one reputable vehicle repairer that if you want cheap family transport that is also reliable and affordable to maintain, both of these home-grown four-door sedans deserve consideration ...
