cj429, I'd agree that the V8s held sway at Bathurst until 1972, when the rain proved a great equaliser. After that, though, I reckon the top XU-1s were more than a match, particularly under Group C rules with their wider tyres, more engine freedoms etc. At Bathurst in 1973, which was dry, Brock/Chivas had that race shot to bits until HDT miscalculated on fuel mileage. They also cleaned up at the Sandown, Surfers and Phillip Island endurance races to win the ManChamps title. By the end of 1973, the XU-1 was clearly superior to the much larger and heavier Falcon Hardtop, which prompted Ford to withdraw from the sport knowing that an even faster V8 Torana was in the pipeline!
