SC, you obviously succumbed to the advertising of your Marshal – a Morris of Elegance –‘The look you need for the life you lead’. I assume you took your black piece of elegance to all the smart places in Melbourne’s society. My first road car was an FE Holden Special and a glance at GMH’s brochure shows more of a nuts and bolts approach. The FE did have new beauty, performance, comfort and safety and one could only be knocked out by the Special’s breathtaking two-tone fashion colours, the chrome fender motifs, number plate frames, sparkling stainless steel moulding that frames the windscreen, windows and roof drip gutter. They spoke not of elegance nor any sort of life I was leading. What I do remember, also as a gorky adolescent, was the day I picked it up in 1964, the Air Chief radio’s valves became sufficiently warm enough for me to hear Hermans Hermits singing ‘I’m into Something Good’. I agreed wholeheartedly that my first car was indeed that.
