Harper was put out right at the end of the event after a head on with a competitor head against rally traffic - as the late Ken Harper tells it: "Ken and Les were put out of the Safari when they had a head on with a Ford Anglia, a competitor. A Rover had broken its steering box and was straddling a bridge, blocking the route. The competitor in the Anglia was heading back to the section start “Like a bat out of hell” and met Ken head on “the only bloody corner in the jungle that you could imagine, straight in to me.”
