The 1963 Rambler Classic donated its doors and a few other things to the new revised and expanded 1964 Rambler American. It had 6inches added to its wheelbase to 106in and was in effect a shorter (by 11 in) and slightly narrower (by an inch) version of the Classic. Almost two for the price of one. How clever was that. Very clever compared to the new boss, Roy Abernethy's idea of turning the Classic into a Marlin.
And yet, poor old BMC, also strapped for cash was castigated for using the same doors from the 1800 for the Maxi, 3 Litre and Kimberley. Doors are the most expensive panels of a car to press. They need inner and outer skins, plus all the window winding mechanism, and of course, the frames around them. AM were able to style the '63 Classic and the '64 American at the same time, but there was a five year gap between the 1800 and Maxi. That of course wasn't the only disaster that BMC fell into, but using the same doors in this case compromised the looks of the Maxi.
