I think the AMI-assembled Toyota Tiara (1963) was pivotal in determining the long-term future of 'car manufacturing' in Australia, as it was the first Toyota to be assembled outside of Japan. Toyota exploited the local content/low import tariff rules of that time very efficiently, as it steadily increased its share of the Australian car market. Others like Nissan and Mitsubishi followed a similar path.
