Back in the 1980s I was involved in the sponsorship of the Kinser sprintcar team. When the team first arrived and began building the race cars, crew chief Karl Kinser (pictured) at first questioned why the cars had to be painted all in black and gold, even the roll cage. In his mind, paint added weight, and he was passionate about light weight. In the USA he used minimal paint on his cars. In the end he agreed that the JPS cars needed to be fully covered in black and gold. As a trade-off he drilled small holes on most of the flat metal surfaces, except the wings.
