His solution was torsion bars, which were much simpler, much lighter and provided all the suspension travel needed. Also, regarding the extent of modifications, Class 6 was for mass-production-based cars - with the emphasis on "based". Things like original chassis rails, external bodywork etc had to be retained but there were endless freedoms beyond that. Check out one of Jim's main rivals at Baja that year.
