I think we must remember that as well as being probably the best and most experienced all round driver in the country at the moment he is also operating as a motoring journo and his job as a journo is to sell magazines. Although I dispute some of the comparisons you have drawn DETROITMUSCLE, (Cobras, GT40's), our manufacturers did raid the the parts bins of their US masters to the extent that the masters allowed - even down to the names - GT-HO. The HO meaning High Output (despite Ford Australia's ministrations) and coming direct from the Mustang. Of course the exceptions are the XU1's and the Chargers (Pacers?). I'm afraid I cannot concur with you cj428 - during the early to mid 70's Aussie motoring magazines did a number of comparisons with the best of ours compared to US models, and invariably the US cars came out the better. Remember, it wasn't till the last of the Kingswoods that Holden paid any attention to handling and introduced their Radial Tuned Suspension. Ford by then were into their XC and responded with a mid model update with improved handling.
I love the debate but remember the statement... WE MADE WORLD CLASS MUSCLE CARS SUPERIOR TO AMERICAN CARS ..not family cars... Have our cars improved yes...lets remember the corvette had 4 wheel disc brakes in the 60,s ..the Monaro 327 well that is a US engine...I love Australian cars but I wont blow up our tires when the American cars were far superior Muscle cars in the 60,s and 70,s.. You are right about the HO but also the name GT had been used in 65 in the US the XR in Australia came out 67 used the lower powered Mustang engine 289 the beautiful steering wheel was from a Fairlane....Bunkie Knudsen at Ford Australia in the 70,s who yes was American preferred to have his personal XW GT fitted with a 428 Cobra Jet and C6 auto back in the US...
