In 1982 I came across a genuine German Escort RS2000 which in standard form had a few significant differences to the local version. This car was one of 25 brought into Australia for the 1976 Bathurst race, mine being the one prepared for Chris Clerehan (so I was told). It had twin fuel tanks and a twin throat, down draft, Weber carburettor, a rather firm, Bathurst suspension set up and a tall final drive ratio for Conrod. The car was all black and the effect was nicely finished off with some Bathurst Globe mags and a half roll-cage. I sought Bob Holden's advice before buying it, something he endorsed wholeheartedly. Bob then pulled the motor down to "freshen it up" as he put it. (one of the piston skirts proved to be cracked). He also replaced the front swaybar (too stiff) and put in a lower diff ratio. The well-balanced result prompted me to do the observed practice and gain a CAMS licence, which then lead to my having a lot of fun with the car in club race meetings and supersprints (although I think the race I had for observed practice was perhaps the highlight - started 7th finished 2nd). I still regard this little beast as one of the best and most fun cars I've ever owned. I even managed to make money on it when I finally sold it a couple of years later.
