GMH sort of lost the plot in regard to the name Holden and I could not agree more that the Commodore name should have been retired on 20 October 2017. What on earth were the executives thinking that it was just the name that sold the cars? However, the name Holden itself had its origins with the Holden 48-215 specifically for the first Australian built car, until Holden became the badge for every foreign GM sourced vehicles. My Dad moved across from a Dodge dealership to a GMH dealership in the months prior to the launch of the 48-215 in late 1948. With the rest of our family I attended the launch of every new Holden until I moved away from home in 1964, although at the time, I think I was more interested in the nibbles and soft drinks that were served rather than the cars! Over the years I have owned four Holdens, a 1962 EK Special, 1966 HD utility, 1967 HR utility (all in Papua New Guinea) and finally a VF Commodore SV6 Series II MY17, which would have to rate as the best car I have ever bought, although my Mitsubishi Colt Galant GTO MII would came a close second! Dad had frequently "badgered" me to buy a Holden, but living in Papua New Guinea, the choice was always Japanese - simply because they came with a radio! Back to the ZB Commodore, if ever there was a car imported into Australia by a previous manufacturer that was an insult to the level of intelligence displayed by our lawmakers, the ZB would be it - a car whose parent company received a subsidy and continued to receive a subsidy until the company was sold. A subsidy that was denied to Holden, Ford and Toyota. Having been a solid owner of many Japanese cars over the years, I take my hat off to every Holden employee who was involved in the manufacture of my Commodore. The level of care taken, knowing their jobs were about to go, is incredible - everything I have checked shows a quality on a par with many imported vehicles - and to think we no longer make them. Finally, a nice gesture from Holden was the supply of two photographs of my car being built. And the petrol economy is on a par with my Mazda3.
