History
This was my first car and it has been through many iterations over the last 30 years. Its current form is what I had always hoped to be able to achieve.
The car was purchased by my parents when I was around 10, and later sold to my older sister. I purchased it from her as my first car and by then it was in a very rough, un-drivable state. I spent time scouring for second hand parts and got it running in time to obtain my drivers license. For my 19th birthday my friends purchased the registration plates “Dodgy1” for the car in reference to the fact that the car was 3-4 different colours and looked pretty dodgy.
The car was mine, and as rough as it was I loved it. In an effort to prove my friends wrong over the next 10 years I modified the vehicle toward the standard it is today. Sadly just after painting it, the car was all but destroyed in an accident thanks to a driver running a red light. I was so upset I couldn’t bring myself to look at the car for 5 years and it sat under a sheet waiting for me to face the damage.
In 2009 I managed to find a donor vehicle for the needed parts, and then began the long process of body modifications to accept the updated Supra drivetrain I had always wanted to use.
This was my chance to do all the modifications right, and to the best of my ability. With all the body fabrication complete it went to be painted in House of Color Candy Apple Red as it previously was. It was always my favourite colour so there was no option in my mind but to do it again. After the bodywork and paint was complete, time and funds didn’t allow me to continue work on the vehicle for many years. She sat under a sheet once again.
Covid came along, and my industry was heavily effected as was my employment. With reduced hours, time became possible to make progress. $$ were tight but thankfully most of the parts had been purchased years before. With the blessing of my supportive wife, we put the time and money aside to get the project moving again.
A close friend and I committed the time to put 1 full day per week into the project over that year. The car was completed in 2022 with final engineering certificates and registration early 2023.
This current build saw a complete bare metal respray, countless modifications to both body and entire drivetrain with no bolt left unturned. It would not have been possible without my friends Dave and Corey who helped with so many things achieving a standard far greater than I could achieve alone.
Today Dodgy1 is far from dodgy, She runs, drives and looks so much better than I could have ever hoped. For me the last few months of driving her have been a life long dream and I’m so thankful to all those who helped me finally see this project completed.
