History
This 3 wheeler came to me as a wreck without a motor. Having a restored a car of the same type I did not want a repeat of another 2 stroke post-war smoking powerplant. I settled for a Honda Spacy ch250 4 stroke and restored the car.
As the Spacy has 10" wheels the front wheels of the Schmitt where changed to 10" as well, needing to enlarge the front wings. I have got a steep driveway and the centrifugal clutch in the Honda unit kept slipping even after replacement.
Modifications
The Honda Spacy mod. is a good choice for level ground. In my case I needed a modification again. As I already had a platform in the back with a swinging arm and 10" driving wheel I gutted the motor and mounted an electric motor on top of the Honda reduction frame via a tilting platform for tensioning the belt drive.
The end result was a well-earned success. The Schmitt negotiates the incline with ease, no smoke, no noise and heaps of torque. Top speed is 100km/h scretching, these motors loose their 'umpf' at high revs, however it is not intended for highway driving.
