Earl worked in his family custom car business which was bought by Don Lee in 1919. Harley Earl worked for Lee designing custom cars for Hollywood stars. He was introduced to one of the Fisher Brothers who built GM's cars, who then introduced him to Alfred Sloan, the boss of GM. Sloan wanted to start a design department and Harley got the job. And the rest, as they say, is history.
