Thank you! We've had massive numbers of entries for our Ultimate Vehicle competition. It wasn't an easy choice but here it is. Our 20 winners are:

The Model T Ford
Thank you Bsa

The model t ford is my ultimate vehicle due to its simple classic lines and ultimate effectiveness as a reliable vehicle in its day.

The Bolwell Nagari Sports
Thank you Roscoe

My ultimate vehicle is the Bolwell Nagari Sports because it represents great Australian engineering and design talent that was in our automotive industry in 1972. The design is really beautiful from any angle and coupled with the Ford 351 4V Cleveland engine mated to the 4 speed top loader gearbox to a Ford axle of 2.93-1 ratio providing, exhilarating performance in both straight line acceleration, and cruising comfort. Many people today look at my Bolwell Nagari Sports, pictured and think it was imported from overseas, when I tell them it was built in Mordialloc Victoria they cannot believe me until I show them the manufacturers plate. The convertible really is an object of function and beauty that has stood the test of time, it is a really good drive and my ultimate vehicle.

The 1942 Jeep

The Porsche 935
Thank you Lisarvic

Mine is the Porsche 935, yes it’s a race car but such a significant vehicle in motor sport and the Porsche company history.  I drive a 911 personally and the heritage is plain to see not only in my vehicle, but also across the range.  By exploiting the sport cars regulations of the mid seventies they were able to develop a vehicle which blitzed the field in Europe and later in the US from 1976 onwards with subsequent iterations of the 935.  A beast to drive from all impressions but a wonder to behold in full flight as I have seen personally with one of its last iterations, the Moby Dick car!

The 1970 Dodge 426 Hemi R/T Challenger 4 speed
Thank you 72coupe

My ultimate vehicle is a 1970 Dodge 426 Hemi R/T Challenger 4 speed, in Plum Crazy with black trim. It is why the term 'MUSCLE' car exists with its classic muscle car lines and legendary tyre frying ability! Sure there are others, but the Challenger is the king!

The Ford XY GTHO Phase 111
Thank you Lundy

I grew up watching the Bathurst 500 races and have always loved the look and sound of the Ford XY GTHO Phase 111, It wasn't till I was in the Army at Enoggera in 1974 that I got to see them in the flesh and also drive one as a few of my mates owned them, I have always wanted one just so I can feel that rush you get when driving a true Aussie muscle car designed and built by Aussie's. They are true legends of the car industry, and always get attention from all age groups.

The “Louise” Vehicle
Thank you Harryhotrod

This is "Louise" She is the Ultimate Vehicle. My wife says that she could compete with a another woman but not with that car.

Louise has taken me on some legendary adventures. louise has made it possible for me to meet a range of amazing people from all walks of life.

Louise has carried many beautiful brides and handsome grooms as her passengers. They all love the car as much as I do, the grils love the colour and the elegance. The boys love the romance of a bye gone era and the raw power.

What is the ultimate Vehicle? "Louise" ! She can stir the emotions and fulfil the dreams of any generation. Louise ignites memories and stories from the past, she creates memories and stories in the present.

A car that has taken you to places that you could not imagine, allowed you to meet and talk to people that you thought was impossible, has to be the Ultimate Vehicle.

The Maserati Ghibli
Thank you Macsorib

Everyone knows the Ferrari Daytona and the Lamborghini Miura. Not everyone knows the Maserati Ghibli, which outsold its Ferrari and Lamborghini rivals at the time, and which was designed by the incomparable Giorgetto Giugiaro (while at Ghia).

I remember the Ghibli on its release. I couldn't get enough of it. I read all the articles, bought all the magazines featuring it. I even had one of my very own that my Dad bought me. It was dark blue, a little like the Iso Grifo on this page, but far sexier because it had an Italian V8 with OHCs, not an American one with pushrod-actuated valves. It might've been a Matchbox but it was all mine and it took pride of place in my bedroom.

It fuelled many dreams.

It was a coupé but I would've had a Spider if Matchbox had made one.

That is my Ultimate Vehicle. Red, if possible but I'll take a blue one, so it can match the little one I've still got.

1973 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455
Thank you LeighP

I've loved Pontiacs since I was a teenager. I would have to say that my ultimate car would be a 1973 Pontiac Trans Am Super Duty 455, in Brewster Green colour with a custom ordered matching green interior (not normally available for the Trans Am, but available for the Esprit model).

The reason I choose this car is that the it (together with the 74 model SD455) marks the end of the factory Musclecar wars in the USA.

All other manufacturers had given up producing factory high performance cars by 1973, yet Pontiac chose to produce and sell this very special engine in the best handling American car built at that time. The Super Duty engine was a completely different casting to the normal 455, a special reinforced block with provision for dry sump oiling. Special heads, intake, camshaft, connecting rods and pistons formed the basis for an engine built for competition use yet sold to the public.

I've driven a Super Duty Trans Am owned by a friend in the US, and they are a very special car.

The reason I chose the Brewster Green colour for the SD is that it is the rarest of the three factory colours available for the Trans Am in 1973.

Aston Martin V8
Thank you GillTech

My Ultimate Vehicle would be an Aston Martin V8. The V8 series were made from 1969 to 1989, with a 5.3 litre V8. My favourite is the 1973-78 'Series 3' which used carburettors instead of the previous fuel injection, and a wicked looking hood scoop in the bonnet. Just 967 Series 3 cars were produced.

As a long-time Mustang owner and Shelby fan, I can see late-60's to early '70's era styling similarities with the Aston Martin V8, particularly across the front of the car, and it's a design look and stance that really hits the mark for me.

Porsche 917 Racer
Thank you CrimsonTide

So why would I pick an Aston Martin V8 and not a Shelby Mustang you may ask? Well, I really lust after both, but at the end of the day the hand-built fit and finish of the Aston Martin wins out over the mass-produced Mustang-based car

Choosing my ultimate vehicle is an extremely difficult task, as I love so many cars. Pushed to select just one for my garage, I would have to say its the awesome Porsche 917 racer that the German company developed for Le Mans primarily. I was fortunate to see this particular car (pictured) at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2009, where no less than 14 of these classic 917's were present. This car, in its iconic Gulf livery actually is the car that Steve McQueen drove in the classic 70's movie "Le Mans": This car says so much that was good about motoring and racing in particular that was at its peak and most exciting in the 1970s - a time before OH&S and concerns about safety, parity, and "putting on a good show for the spectators" were considerations.  Men were men. Cars were beasts. How I long for those days once more...

Dino 246 GTS
Thank you Zman2012

A true classic is this Ferrari and although when it was first produced as a tribute to Enzo Ferraris' son Alfredino or Dino as he was affectionately known, this model originally carried no Ferrari badges.

What I love about the Dino 246 GTS is that it is certainly a rare car and highlights not only the timeless beautiful shape penned by Pinninfarina but the use of the lovely sounding 2.4 litre V6 and positioning it transversely making it not only a unique Ferrari but unique in the annals of sports cars of the time.

Another interesting yet factual point I like is that it was also produced in right hand drive, albeit in limited numbers. Had it not been for the engineering ingenuity and dedication of the original Melbourne Ferrari Concessionaire W.H. Lowe to produce the first right hand drive version for the factory, it may never have come to pass.

It is all of these things combined with its subtle beauty, feminine curves, especially in its GTS form, that makes the Dino 246 so desirable and increasingly unobtainable; as it has become recognised by car lovers around the world for sometime as a true collectable thus raising pricing to incredible levels for a car that was essentially an entry level ferrari. It is for these reasons that the Dino 246 GTS is my ultimate vehicle.

1961 KARMANN GHIA
Thank you Isamustang

I share my 22 year old daughter, Miranda's dream to own this car so we can share the passion together as father and daughter.

Sadly last year, Miranda was hit by another car a year ago and her type 3 VW wagon was totalled.

She is very unhappy about it as she is attending Uni in Sydney and now does not have a car.

Ever since we bought the type 3, we have both dreamt of the ultimate car, a 1961 Karmann Ghia.

She's waiting for the time when she finishes Uni and has a job to be able to have a car once more, her dream car of course.

The Mangusta
Thank you Radman

The Mangusta has that look , that appeal. Its my idea of a work of art. Everyone has something in their life that pleases them down to the bone and most people have an opinion of what good art is and would hang on the wall. A Mangusta could be to me a piece of art that could be on display in the entry way of my house but also faced so that i can appreciate it from the entertainment room. Mr DeTomaso also created a super car that had non exotic mechanicals that still powered the car to very good speeds even on todays standards but without the Ferrari or Lambourghini price tag of buyimg it and also maintaining it. Truly a beautiful and genius car that paved the way for many more good cars from Detomaso and copy cat builders that latched onto its practical concept.

The MG Metro 6R4
Thank you awdmoke

I love the sheer audacity of the MG Metro 6R4.

With it's oversized turbochaged engine stuffed inside the rear seat area, it harkens back to the Group B rally era & all of the excesses of aldmost unlimited rallying. Although not the most successful or impressive of the Group B cars, it is the epitome of what could be acheived while remaining within the rules.

The fact that we never got to see anything like it here in Australia makes it all the more desirable in my eyes - the fact that I am biased towards Minis probably helps!

Holden Monaro
Thank you HK327GTS

This is my ultimate vehicle. Why? Partly because I own it, but mainly because of the following reasons:

This model has a significant if not iconic position in Australian Motoring history.

It arrived at a time of social change and led the charge for Holden into the Aussie musclecar era.

It's classic styling is still instantly recognizable by most even today.

It was the first Holden Model to win the Bathurst 500.

It pleases others who see it (even Ford nuts!).

It's fun to drive.

It is a true Australian muscle car.

It is Australian.

It's beautiful.

Oh! and of course.............It's red.

What more could you ask for?
