Australia’s premier classic vehicle show Motorclassica returns to Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building for three days this Spring after a two year COVID-enforced absence, with Shannons celebrating with a rare number plate simulcast/online auction from October 4-8.

With an expected range of 20-25 numeric plates on offer, the auction is being held in response to the record interest in early Australian number plates. Shannons has maintained its long-term sale and expertise in the number-plate space, continuously re-setting the benchmark for prices in Australia during the past decade.

Early black and white number plates in the auction with proven collectability include a range of three, four, five and six-digit numbers, including many desirable ‘lucky’ numbers and those with appealing numeric combinations.

The best of the Victorian three-digit plates is ‘388’, with its ABB combination very desirable to collectors. Other 3-digit plates on offer include ‘428’, ‘774’ and ‘929’, while amongst the desirable six-digits plates are the numerically-pleasing ‘100.222’ and 100.333. Amongst the 4-digit plates, ‘1.995’ would make an ideal birthday gift for a child or grand-child.

Other early black and white number plates in the auction that have followed the trend and with proven collectability are Victorian bicentennial number plates, issued back in 1988 to celebrate the bicentenary of Australia, a range of 200 plates were release that ranged between 1788-1988. Having gained great momentum in value over the past few years with enthusiasts and collectors, Shannons are offering 2 of these sought after combinations ‘1805’ and ‘1910’, both slatted to realise between $100-150,000 each.

The auction will start online on October 4, and bidding will continue until closing with a live auction at Motorclassica on Saturday, October 8.
