While the basic shape was agreed in 1952, many crucial styling motifs were debated for 18 months and the car could have looked quite different to what went into the showrooms. Early proposals featured a bonnet line that was lower than the tops of the mudguards and a “dip” in the belt line just where the front doors began, as can be seen in these renderings. These ideas ran into problems once the height of the new V8 engine was taken into account, so the bonnet line and mudguard lines were raised. This gave the car a narrow tall appearance and made the “dip” look ungainly. Designing the ‘55 would stay the same throughout the car’s ns and the Nomad retained a straight line. 15
