7th Annual Atherton Classic Car, Bike & Swap Meet: Classic Restos - Series 38

By Shannons - Published on 08 August 2018

Fletch believes that there's nothing better than a drive in the country that ends up at a country classic car show, making the trip worthwhile. Fletch has driven to Atherton in North Queensland for the 7th Annual Atherton Classic Car, Bike & Swap Meet.

The locals have come from far and wide to attend this annual event sponsored by Atherton Auto Wreckers, distance doesn't deter then out here. Fletch gets amongst the crowd and gets the inside story on some very interesting vehicles. First up is Steve with a 1963 Compact Ford Fairlane the result of a 7-year rebuild generated out of 4 donor cars, then Steve from the event sponsors Atherton Auto Wreckers with his completely stock standard 1965 Ford Mustang 259 V8. As Fletch puts it, this is no trophy winner and going back sometime when he sighted one of these the first thought was to undertake a complete bare metal restoration. But overtime Fletch has become a little more open on the suggestion that all classic cars should be restored; instead some that are kept in original condition depict the history and journey of the vehicle and worthy of preserving them as they are, as Steve has.

Nothing Fletch enjoys more than a Classic truck, and Owen has turned up with two beauties, a 1985 Kenworth W Model and a MACK Superliner V8 500 HP 12 Speed in beautifully restored condition. Fletch chats with Owen about driving these trucks back then and some tales of the truckie trade. Then there is Steve with a classic 1944 Indian 1200 cc V-Twin Motorcycle, while there has been some work on the engine and wheel bearings, it's in original condition. Finally, there's Wim with his 1962 Chevrolet Belair that spend 21 years in a shed in Charters Towers back in 1976 before being restored in Townsville and used as a wedding car before being purchased by Wim. The trip to Atherton in Far North Queensland more than justified with some great classics on show.
