And let us not forget the smartest and cheekiest Australian muscle car of them all - the LC Torana GTR XU-1. A brilliant strategy by GM-H to avoid having to build a Monaro that could, in the words of Peter Lewis-Williams "out GT-HO the GT-HO" by tackling its Ford foe with a totally different mindset in 1970. Much smaller, lighter and more agile than the Monaro, the six cylinder XU-1's much smaller appetite for brakes, tyres and fuel in racing challenged and ultimately disproved the age-old theory that there was no substitute for cubic inches. No car changed the muscle car landscape like the XU-1. 50 years young in 2020!
