The EJ has not really been considered a "hot" Holden, but in the early days of Liverpool Speedway's pavement era (it began in mid-1974), the track created a second division sedan category which was largely comprised of EJs. Part of the idea was to encourage cheap racing using cheap "grey" Holden engines. The cars were surprisingly quick, usually only a second slower than the V8s, which were turning the track in around 14-15 seconds. The reason the EJs were fast is that they used the technology that had been perfected for the Holden engined speedcars of the 1960s, especially all the great performance gear that the McGees (Hedley, Phil and Chris) had developed. Here's a photo of the pits, with some of the many EJs all lined up.
