My contribution to this conversation is the 1951-53 Hudson Hornet. So, ok, it is a big car by European standards, but in the USA, it was not overly large and not a luxury car. And its sports sedan credentials? How’s this for an actual racing resume: The Hornet won 27 of the 34 NASCAR races in 1952, 22 out of 37 in 1953, and 17 from 37 in 1954. This was a time when stock cars were stock cars. On the rival AAA circuit Marshall Teague drove a stock Hornet to 14 wins during the season. In 1952 the car achieved a winning percentage of 83%. It ran a six of 308 cu.in and it was the largest six in the world at the time. Is it a contender?
