1974 was as good as it gets for Bathurst races. That 1974 race, which ran for almost eight hours, was one of the most exciting I've seen. The debut of the new Torana L34s, with Brock racing to a six-lap lead before blowing his engine. The collapse of Moffat's mega-dollar Brut 33 Super Falcon attack. The torrential rain that hit the Mountain, which saw the emergence of Bathurst rookie Jim Richards and his brilliance in the wet, driving a Kiwi-entered Torana L34 with mis-matched wets and no brakes to a miraculous third place. And of course Johnny Goss, the Ford battler, winning the race in his McLeod Ford-backed XA GT Hardtop with Kevin Bartlett after five years of trying. That race had a national TV audience of millions on the edge of their seats for almost eight hours. Yep, 1974 was a great year indeed!
