You're so right, JW. Given its extraordinary Safari record in the 1960s you would think the 404 would have been a very popular choice of car for the Marathon, particularly given that a factory prepared and entered Citroen DS had the event all but won until that disastrous collision on the final transport stage. 1968 was also about six years before Peugeot started its take-over of Citroen, so the two French marques were still in competition with each other at the time. This would be a very interesting question to pose to a Peugeot historian - any takers?
