The town I come from, Balmoral in western Victoria had a population of about 4 or 500, but it sported two dealerships, both from GMH. It was at Central Motors that I remember seeing the first FJ Special with its chrome around the windows. Three years later I was gob-smacked at seeing my first FE in two-tone green, and it just seemed too modern to be a Holden. The building had a row of pumps out the front, all of them gravity fed with the 6 gallon glass jars and they were all different brands. Inside I can remember two enamel signs hanging from the ceiling - Buick and Oakland. The other dealership sold Vauxhall and Bedford. The owner had the contract with the state government to run the school buses, so off I went in one of those really modern OB Bedfords with the futuristic lines running right round the lower part. Nearly all the '50s Holden, Vauxhall and Bedford brochures in my collection came from these two outlets. Both families who ran these dealerships were part of the community - they supported football and netball teams, the local fire brigade and everything that goes into a small rural community. My best mate was the Holden dealer's son, so there was a bit of rivalry, because we had a Zephyr. I don't have any older photos - these were taken within the last thirty years - when Esso sold petrol!
