Dr John, your comment made me think a bit more about why the '65s were so successful, not only the Chevrolet but the entire GM full sized car range. It occurred to me (and why did I not spot this before?) that the basic shape, especially the 4 door hardtop, was a re-run of the 1963 Buick Riviera, which had been percolating around GM's design studios since mid-1960. Maybe that's the clue?
