You're spot-on there, RealDeal. Gough rode around in a 450 SEL with the Commonwealth Numero Uno (C-1) plates proudly displayed. In fact, it was reportedly one of two 450 SELs and both were of the armoured S-Guard variety as detailed in my story. It's interesting to note the elitism in Gough's comment about the S-Class in the attached news clipping. As far as he was concerned, ordinary Aussie cars (including Statesmans, LTDs and Regals obviously) were appropriate for those beneath him while only a Mercedes-Benz was worthy of his status. No wonder our car industry died with this kind of attitude in Canberra, even way back when.
