Even though I was only a primary school kid at the time, I can vividly remember Uncle Charlie showing off his brand new S50 (third-gen) Toyota Crown which was fitted with the optional electrically-engaged overdrive unit. I thought it was so cool that he could engage it simply with the push of a button on the dashboard and barely hear the engine rpm decrease as the road speed increased. So high tech! The Crown was an amazing car at the time, with peerless build quality, engineering refinement and ride quality. And I learned a new name that day - 'overdrive' - which managed to find its way into most conversations for a while after because it sounded so grown-up and technical for a 9-year-old to say.
