Yes, American highway patrol police have a different mindset to Australia's contingent. As MO observes, they assess situations and let the cars on the freeway set the "natural" speed, intervening only when someone really goes too fast or does something stupid. My impression has always been that they want cars to keep moving quickly. Meanwhile, another overseas "road rule" I found very convenient was when I lived in London (Weybridge, actually, just near Brooklands) and parking was at a premium. No one, including parking police, objected when you parked in the opposite direction of the traffic in narrow streets. If you were driving down a street and saw a parking space on the other side of the road, you could just drive straight into it and park. No need to turn around and come back and do a reverse park. A real time saver. And convenient.
