Well, where do I start with this one...lol... My dad had a Renault 16 tl which I learnt to drive in, soon after we joined up with the Renault car club of Vic. After saving all my paper round money I bought my first Renault 8 with an R12 motor, extractors, and a single DCOE side draft, that I use to take to motorkhana and drive the neighbors mad stuffing around with it in the driveway, as you do when you're 17... I love the control and the balance of the 8's and the 10's, the 8's handled a bit better being half a foot shorter at each end though... The amusing thing about a stock rear engine early Renault, was that everything happened slow enough to retain control so you could normally think ahead, and catch it or let it flow around a corner. When you modified them though, well, they did start to fight back a bit more... but, still great fun. The main concept Renault had had, was to keep the engine over the driving wheels, so as to keep the majority of the weight over them to keep traction. After the 8's and the 10's I got into 15's and 17's where, then, I was an apprentice at a Renault /Peugeot dealership, and had a foreman that use to run the Works Renault rally team, so, no more stock engine! Built a 12G motor putting out around 130 hp in this crappy looking multi colored thing. This 15 was quick, and would surprise a lot of people, and police wouldn't give it a second look... unless they heard it and, yes, they drove very differently after those modifications, you had to adapt to both.. These days my collection has grown a bit, I now have 4 various Gordinis, a Clio 182 cup, a Clio track car that I hope to finish after building customers track cars, and my latest toy is a 1981 V6 alpine that's slightly modified... As for Peugeots, I've worked on them for over 25 years and seen a lot of models come and go, I still think the best car Peugeot released until recently was the 405 MI16, even better and one of the most loved cars I own is my 405 MI16X4, that thing drives like its on rails, and with the Citroen active suspension in the rear it is insane around the corners.. yes you might realise by now im slightly one eyed.. lol.. but you stick with what you love :) then you run your own french workshop :)
