Mitsubishi 3000GT: the forgotten Japanese supercar

While researching a recent story on Mitsubishi, I was reminded of a model which was sold in Australia during the Japanese supercar era of the GT-R and NSX which barely rates a mention these days - the 3000GT. The fact it doesn't have a competition heritage like its Nissan and Honda rivals probably has a lot to do with that, as a racing 'halo' is a big part of a classic car's appeal. Even so, it was a very complex and advanced car for its day, with a front transversely-mounted twin-turbo DOHC 24-valve 3.0 litre V6 with more power and torque than the R32 GT-R. Like the Nissan it also had all-wheel drive and all-wheel steer, plus ABS, adaptive dampers and 'active' aerodynamics which could increase rear wing angle and front spoiler depth to increase downforce at high speeds. It even had switchable Sport/Tour exhaust modes. Unfortunately, it also weighed more than 1700kg, a huge figure at the time which ensured it would not see any significant race track duty. It was also expensive, with a retail price that had nudged its way up to just under $120,000 (even more than the Nissan Aust-delivered R32) by the time it was withdrawn from sale in Australia, where not surprisingly it found few buyers. So what do you guys think? Does the 3000GT deserve greater recognition as a Japanese supercar of the GT-R/NSX era? Seems like a bit of a sleeper to me.
