In haute cuisine there are four aspects to the food; taste, smell, texture and sight. The food must look inviting as well as smell good, taste good and feel right in the mouth. There are three aspects to motor racing aside from one's allegiance to a driver/team/car; the sight of the race craft, the smell of the racing fuel and rubber etc and the SOUND of the engines. All combine to provide the viewer with a complete picture of the stresses and engineering. Remove the sound and you might as well watch people power walking around the track (no disrespect to competitive power walkers meant). I know the the St Mary's Trophy race at Goodwood is looking back with nostalgia but consider this; these cars reveal their foibles and weaknesses and yet are driven at huge speeds never intended by the manufacturer (Austin A30 case in point). They sound great, they look great as they drift and hang the tail out and they draw a HUGE crowd. Of course they are also, it would seem, a great deal of fun to race as there are a large number of them in the races from A30 to Mark VI Jags to Austin Metropolitans. Racing to improve the breed....fine....go ahead.....but let's also have some real, growling, tyre squealing, smoking racing that we plebs can relate to. That's what brings the monies in and puts bums on seats.
