Interesting story JW and I love the brochure shots and adverts from the era. You make a valid point about the Stanza being compared too directly with the 1600 and therefore perhaps overly criticised by journos. Even so, I reckon if Nissan had specified the L20B 2.0 litre SOHC engine for the Australian-made cars, as used in some of the rally cars, it would have made a big difference to its performance and avoided perceptions of it trying to be another Datsun 1600. And, I must say, although I found the SSS two-tone paint and decals a bit garish at the time, through my nostalgic eyes it looks pretty sharp today. I've also only just noticed how similar it looks to Ford's XE Falcon ESP of the same era (see pics attached). Question is, who thought of it first - Ford or Nissan?
