Being an oval track devotee above all else, I have seen many great races here and overseas. One which ranks highly is Randy Kinser's win in the the inaugural Castrol Oils Ain't Oils Grand National sprintcar event at Liverpool on 7th January, 1987. The race attracted a sell out crowd: and I do mean a sell out. In the race that night were fellow Americans Danny Smith, Jimmy Sills, Steve Kinser (Randy's brother) and their father Bobby Kinser. Locals in the field included Garry Rush, George Tatnell, Bob Blacklaw, Max Dumesny and Steve Brazier: all national and state champions. Sills led till lap 20 then Tatnell took over. With 8 laps to go, Randy was second behind Tatnell. He kept edging higher and higher up the track making George also move higher to cover him. Then, with 3 laps remaining of the 30 lap event, Randy went right up to the concrete wall between turns 3 and 4, hauled his car left and launched it down the track's banking and under Tatnell and just raced away. It was a masterful move. Tantell finished 2nd and Rush 3rd. Here's a photo, taken by Geoff Davis, of Randy at Liverpool that night running right up next to the wall, which appeared on the cover of Dennis Newlyn's sprintcar magazine. Steve Kinser did not have a successful night at the Castrol, up ending his car in a heat race and then pulling out of the final.
