One of the best stories I've heard in this context was told by former Ford works team mechanic John Wynne. At the Adelaide round of the 1973 ATCC, they locked away Moffat's Phase III after qualifying on Saturday, headed off for a quick feed and then straight to bed. As several mechanics were sharing the same hotel room, late at night they all heard this loud V8 thundering up through the Adelaide Hills and they all commented how fantastic it sounded. Little did they know it was Moffat's race car, after thieves had broken into the garage down the road where it was being kept and drove off into the night! It was missing for days before a bushwalker discovered it abandoned in the scrub, complete with a handwritten note to Moffat apologising for stealing his car. Meanwhile Moffat borrowed Murray Carter's Phase III for the Adelaide race and finished second to Brock, before going on to win the 1973 championship. Amazing story.
