Mick Miller had a successful career as a high performance coach for some of Australia’s top athletes, including Olympians, Rugby League teams and America’s Cup campaigns. He was constantly pushing, pushing, pushing!

“I was looking after everybody else, but not really looking after myself” said Mick.

When Mick discovered a lump on the side of his neck whilst drying off after a swim, little did he know that his life was about to take a dramatic twist.

He was diagnosed with throat and neck cancer, and about to face one of the biggest challenges in his entire life. Mick was under the care of a team of cancer specialists during his 70-day stay in hospital. In that time he lost a total of 24kg, was only able to eat through a feeding tube and could not speak. He endured 8 weeks of radiation everyday and chemotherapy once a week to fight what was an aggressive cancer.

Once out of hospital, when he had regained some strength, Mick’s journey of discovery and recovery began. He packed the Rocket, his 1968 VW Beetle, with a 2-man tent, an esky, a sleeping bag, a blender and a few clothes. After a quick look at the map, he found Highway 1 and then was off with his iPhone in hand to take some photos along the way.
Mick spent 16 months on the road. Travelling Australia – Mick’s Way follows his trip (all 20,000 km) and captures Mick’s daily adventures with a backdrop of the awe-inspiring Australian landscape.  His story and photography are heartfelt and inspiring.

‘Travelling around Australia I discovered more about this great country of ours, its people and their stories, I got to know the real me and discovered how simple life can be.”

‘There are no wrong turnings, only paths we were meant to walk’.
