Stunning Buicks cruise into Shannons Sydney Winter Auction

By Shannons - 27 July 2016

• Two stunning mildly customised Buick cruisers

• Exceptional 1950 Series 62 Cadillac convertible

Two traffic-stopping and era-correct Buick coupes with modern upgrades to make them more enjoyable to drive are early highlights of Shannons Sydney Winter Auction on Monday, August 29.

This stunning 1955 Super 2-door pillarless coupe rebuilt by award-winning customiser Justin Hills to resemble a top-of-the-line Roadmaster is expected to sell for $100,000-$120,000.

Built by the award-winning and internationally renowned painted and car customiser, Justin Hills of Hills & Co. Custom Auto Restoration in Taree, NSW, the black and silver 1955 Super 2-door pillarless coupe has been given a minor cosmetic upgrade to resemble a top-of-the-line Roadmaster, modelled after one of comedian Jay Leno’s own cars.

Styling modifications include the iconic four portholes down the front mudguards, while the hubcaps are ‘spinner style’ as per a traditional customs.

This traffic-stopping Candy Apple Red 1949 Buick Sedanette that reportedly cost more than $200,000 to build is expected to sell in the $100,000-$120,000 range.

The 1949 Sedanette is a highly sought-after fastback body style, resplendent in bright candy apple red paint and sumptuous cream and red leather interior.

Both Buicks feature modern leather trim and Vintage Air air conditioning, as well as contemporary computer-controlled height-adjustable airbag suspension that allows smooth driving on-road and a lowered stance when parked reminiscent of traditional mild custom vehicles.

The 1949 Sedanette still features a stock 248-cid Fireball straight-eight and Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission, maintaining an appealing link to its production days.

Both Buicks have had their drivetrains rebuilt, with the 1955 coupe still featuring a 322cui Buick Nailhead V8 – a legendary engine, used extensively in hot rodding and the early days of drag racing – and a three-speed automatic.

The ’55 features a Fat Man Fabrications front-end with tubular control arms and rack and pinion steering, based on Mustang II components. This well-engineered modification is a very popular swap in US custom car and hot rodding circles for old steering box and king pin-equipped cars.

Each Buick reportedly cost more than $200,000 to build, making them exceptional value at their anticipated selling range of $100,000-$120,000 at Shannons August 29 Sydney auction.

This superb 1950 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible restored from the ground up by Justin Hills is expected to sell in the $100,000-$120,000 range.

The same vendor is also offering his stunning black with cream leather and chrome wire wheels 1950 Cadillac Series 62 at the Sydney auction.

The Caddy is another stunning ground-up restoration by Justin Hills and – like the two Buicks – runs a stock engine, in this case a 390-cid V8 mated to a rebuilt four-speed Super Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. It is also expected to command a similar $100,000-$120,000.
