Stirling Moss needs little introduction to passionate motoring enthusiasts. However, his interest in wine is not so well known.
Sir Stirling Moss and Penny’s Hill wine producer, Tony Parkinson, discussed many times Stirling’s wine preferences. Notably a partially wooded Adelaide Hills Chardonnay and for those red-drinking visitors to his London home, McLaren Vale Grenache.
From these discussions, a joint venture with Sir Stirling & Lady Moss saw the creation of the 2014 ‘White Helmet’ Chardonnay and Grenache, in matching burgundy bottles made by acclaimed winemaker, Alexia Roberts.
Tony Parkinson’s sister-in-law Penny Dowie, a noted portrait artist, was engaged to render images of Moss at the wheel during the golden era. When he famously won the 1955 Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz with Denis Jenkinson, the 1955 British GP against Fangio and dominated the F1 GP at Monaco in 1956 with a 250F Maserati. The branding also required the express permission of Mercedes-Benz Stuttgart.
Limited Edition 2014 Adelaide Hills Chardonnay “722"
In addition to the White Helmet range, a Limited Edition of just 722 bottles of an individually gift-boxed and numbered 722 Chardonnay was created ($35.00 per bottle) to mark the 60th anniversary of the amazing Mille Miglia win on May 1st, 1955. 722 was the winning car’s race number, designating the start time [7:22 am] from Brescia.
The Stirling Moss Wines launched in 2015, and have been available only through Penny’s Hill McLaren Vale cellar door and on-line. Now these Stirling Moss ‘White Helmet’ & Limited Edition “722” wines have been made available in an exclusive arrangement for Shannons Club Members.
