Jaguars steal the limelight at Shannons Melbourne Autumn Auction
• Strong results for ‘no reserve’ Classics
• 91 per cent vehicle clearance rate in $2m-plus overall result
• Four-digit numerical black and white number plates achieve strong results
A quartet of Classic Jaguars brought the standout vehicle results at Shannons May 2 Melbourne Autumn Auction that saw 91 per cent of all vehicles sold on the hammer for a solid $2 million-plus overall result.
While the top individual result of the auction was the $142,000 paid for a beautifully presented, Red, right hand drive Series 1, 4.2 E-Type coupe, it was pushed hard for bragging rights by a restored 1966 Series 1, 4.2-litre 2+2 Coupe that eventually sold with ‘no reserve’ for $136,000 – almost twice its pre-auction estimate.
Equally outstanding was the $69,000 paid for a circa-1964 Jaguar Mk2 3.8 Manual saloon featuring a number of mechanical upgrades and the $64,000 realised by a beautiful British Racing Green 1948 Jaguar Mk IV 3.5 Saloon offered with ‘no reserve’.
Rounding off a great night for Jaguars, a ‘no reserve’ black 1951 Jaguar Mk V Saloon that had travelled just 14,000 miles in the hands of its current owner for the past 16 years brought $28,000.
Other notable vehicle results on the night included market-leading prices achieved by a brace of ‘G Series’ Porsche 911 models.
A striking Brisbane-delivered and highly optioned Arrow Blue with rare Pascha velour trim MY1980 911 SC with less than 115,000km on its odometer brought $84,000 after strong floor and phone bidding.
Meanwhile a Guards Red Australian-delivered 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupe with 202,707km on its odometer sold two lots later for $100,000.
In between them, an elegant factory right hand drive 1988 Ferrari 412i Coupe coming to auction from long-term ownership with just over 32,000km on its odometer sold on estimate for $76,500.
Amongst other good results in the auction, a rare left hand drive ‘Hoffman’ variation of the classic ‘Citroen 2CV – one of just three known examples in Australia – sold to a Citroen enthusiast for $29,000, while a beautiful, black Australian-delivered Citroen DS21 fitted with the model’s optional five-speed manual gearbox made $24,000.
Muscle car enthusiasts didn’t leave empty-handed, with a well presented ‘Yellow Dolly’ 1973 Holden LJ Torana GTR XU-1 selling for $47,000, while a restored Starlight Blue metallic 1970 Ford XW Fairmont V8 sedan brought $31,000 and a 1966 left hand drive Green Gold Ford Mustang ‘K-Code’ Coupe made $37,000.
Enthusiasts shopping for budget-priced Classic ‘club cars’ were well served, with a 1961 Renault Floride Convertible, a 1967 Saab V4 two-door saloon and a 1964 Land-Rover SWB Utility all selling for $7,000, while a well-presented 1955 MG ZA Magnette saloon brought $10,000 and a 1973 Alfa Romeo Berlina 2000 Sedan sold for $6,500.
However it was the numerical black and white number plates in the auction that brought the greatest surprises, with four-digit plates in interesting numerical combinations pushing their three-digit alternatives closely in value.
The top-selling plate of the sale was ‘675’ that sold for $106,000, but the best four-digit plate ‘1.212’ brought a near-record $77,000, recording the third best result of the 11 numerical plates on offer.
Other notable plate results were the $85,000 paid for ‘556’, $74,000 for ‘431’ and the $45,000 and $29,500 paid respectively for the four-digit plates ‘6.111’ and ‘4.580’.
