Cream of Classics rise for Shannons new HQ auction

Shannons is assembling the cream of vintage, classic and sporting vehicles for its first auction in its new Melbourne headquarters on Monday February 27.

The move this month by Australia’s leading classic vehicle insurer and auction specialist into new Melbourne HQ at 40 Corporate Drive, Heatherton – just 1.5km from its former Warrigal Road, Cheltenham home – comes 36 years after founder Robert Shannon staged his first classic auction in 1981.

Shannons first 2017 Melbourne Classic Auction has already attracted a stellar collection of car, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and memorabilia to mark the occasion, with 50 vehicles expected to cross the auction block.

Entered to date are two highly-collectible GTS Monaros, three sought-after ‘Brock’ and HSV SS Commodores, a stunning Mercedes-Benz 230SL, two very desirable Post War Triumph motorcycles, three stately Rolls-Royces and a spectacular 1925 Morris ‘Winery’ light truck, complete with wine barrels.

This Warwick Yellow ‘Bathurst’ GTS 327 is one of two sought-after 1968 Monaros in Shannons first auction at its new Heatherton, Melbourne headquarters on February 27.

The auction standout for Australian Muscle Car enthusiasts is a superb Warwick Yellow 1968 Holden HK Monaro GTS 327 manual coupe, similar to the car that recorded the Monaro’s first Bathurst victory in 1968. With local performance car values on the rise again, it is expected to sell in the $200,000-$230,000 range.

Supporting it is a very original 1968 HK Monaro 186S GTS coupe in equally stunning, restored condition that is slated to sell for $70,000 - $80,000.

This 1988 HSV Group A Walkinshaw sedan is one of three HDT/HSV SS Commodores.

Two HDT ‘Brock’ Commodores – a 1984 VK SS and a low kilometre 1986 VL Group A SS HDT sedan and a HSV Group A Walkinshaw sedan, are other highly sought-after Holdens in the auction, with the Walkinshaw expected to bring $80,000-$90,000.

Meanwhile for early Holden enthusiasts, there is a stunning concours-winning 1962 EK Special Sedan with many period accessories ($32,000-$36,000).

Sporting Ford enthusiasts have the choice of a superbly-presented 1972 Escort 1600 Twin Cam ($46,000-$52,000), plus two ‘no reserve’ Australian Ford V8 Muscle Cars – a 1969 ZC Fairlane 351 'T-Code' Manual Sedan ($30,000-$40,000) and an XW GT (manual) replica ($35,000-$45,000).

Rolls-Royce is represented by three examples, topped by a beautifully-presented ‘no reserve’ 1964 V8-engined two-tone metallic grey Silver Cloud III V8 Saloon ($65,000-$75,000).

This stately 1926 20HP two-door Doctors Coupe is one of three Rolls-Royce vehicles.

For enthusiasts of Vintage Rolls-Royce models there is a a stately cream and black 1926 20HP two-door Doctors Coupe ($60,000-$70,000) and a unique 1937 Rolls-Royce 25-30 P2 Shooting Brake being offered with ‘no reserve’ ($35,000-$45,000).

Mercedes-Benz coupe enthusiasts have a choice of three SL models topped by a fastidiously restored 1965 230SL Pagoda Roof coupe ($110,000-$120,000), while there is also a very stylish 1966 300SE Coupe on offer ($75,000-$85,000).

Jaguar is represented by four classic models highlighted by a restored and nicely-presented 1947 Mk IV saloon and an E-Type 2+2 Coupe.

This c.1951 Triumph GP 500 Race bike is one of two important Post War Triumph classic racing motorcycles.

Classic Post War British sporting motorcycle collectors have a choice of two Triumphs – a c.1949 Triumph Tiger Race bike ($15,000-$20,000) and a c.1951 Triumph GP 500 Race bike ($25,000-$35,000).

This fully-restored 1925 Morris 1/2 Tonne Light Tray Truck is expected to sell with ‘no reserve’ for $20,000-$30,000.
