Once again the city of Geelong came alive with the reverberations of classic engines revving up Ritchie Boulevard surrounded by the vibrant colours of a street festival in all its glory. Classic cars and bikes gleamed in the hot sun accompanied with the vibrant early fashions of this motoring antiquity. The two day event sees likeminded motor enthusiasts test their mettle against the clock as they power down the eight mile strip flanked by picturesque seaside palms and grassy banks lending themselves well to those looking for a great viewing vantage point throughout the day’s proceedings.

I headed down early Sunday morning to check out all the action on and off the track. Upon arrival there was an energetic vibe throughout the waterfront as display cars of all makes and models converged on the manicured grassed foreshore while a craft market arose in one section prepared for the influx of people eager for an entertaining day out. Guys and girls alike were dressed for the occasion and keen to show off their period fashion at the Fashions on the Field contest held later in the day.

With camera in hand, I picked up my media pass and headed off to capture the hustle and bustle of this motoring carnival.  Pit lane was awash with activity as owners tweaked and tuned their classic and exotic vehicles and cycles to get the best performance out of them. The ages of these heritage racers spanned the length of the 20th century and that included the drivers too!

Outside pit lane, trade stands mixed with vehicle displays showcased what they had on offer to the motoring public. Wild drag cars  mixed with pristine classic vintage vehicles and all manner of rides in between while show cars set up full displays demonstrating the length of restoration some enthusiasts will go to. Others were content to cruise in and park up their road worn classic rides that had seen the miles but had been lovingly maintained over its lifetime.

I caught up with friends throughout the day giving the camera a break as we chatted over a couple drinks in one of the numerous restaurants located along the waterfront. The hive of activity was steady throughout the day spoiling us photographers for photographic choice as we contemplated where our next action or static shot was going to come from next.

Finally, as time for winding up proceedings influences the weary but satisfied public to call it a day and marketers, car owners and racers alike to pack up their various wares and motoring equipment, we muse among friends where our next gathering will take place and how well we enjoyed partaking in this motoring celebration vowing to return next year. I look forward to seeing you there too.

Keep on cruising,

Cheers,

Greg
