Tricks of the Trade - Cold Snap

Trouble
Early morning starts in winter can leave you shivering like a cat in a freezer. Your hands are cold, your face is cold, but you don’t want to rug up like the Michelin man as the temperature will soon rise once you hit race pace. Not only is being cold an uncomfortable feeling, it affects your riding since you lose some feel for the bike controls.

Trick
Handguards or brush guards keep a certain amount of wind and cold off your hands, so why not make some extensions. Some cardboard or plastic can be used to shield your hands and then quickly removed when needed. The same material can be used to shield your face from the elements. It’s not as warm as a full face helmet, but can convert back to off road mode in no time!
