The first (XR) and second (XT) Falcon GT models changed the way Aussies thought about performance sedans, but the 1970 XW took expectations to a new level. The genius behind the Falcon GT was American Bill Bourke, who was sent out to Australia to reverse the Falcon’s poor market standing. It was Bourke who, to the amusement of his US colleagues, conceived the idea of a four-door GT, which would combine police pursuit car mechanicals with Fairmont luxury – this was the original XR model. But even that sensational machine did not prepare Australians for the XW Falcon GT! Powered by the 351 cubic-inch Windsor V8 and with Super Roo decals and delete option bonnet locking pins, Ford Australia’s third version of its iconic four-door GT was nothing short of a revelation. Its combination of Bathurst-bound performance and extroverted exterior gave keen customers – and all of us who could only admire from a distance – a sense that the future was now, in 1969!
