Mercedes Benz’s W108/109 S-Class saloon was the pinnacle of luxury car design from the time of its introduction in 1965, featuring stylish, classical lines by Paul Bracq, a roomy and beautifully appointed interior and was powered by a range of six-cylinder engines. It was initially available in standard (W108) or long (W109) wheelbases, however for 1968 that changed with the introduction of the 280SEL model which retained the shorter W108 configuration. In the best tradition of Stuttgart's finest, the W108/W109 S-Class boasted state of the art safety equipment, roadholding and luxury features and was built to the highest standards. Confusing matters further, Benz introduced a ‘hero’ 300SEL 6.3 V8-engined model in late 1967 which was subsequently embraced by the broader range when a 3.5 litre V8 powered 300SEL became available in 1969. By then, Mercedes had introduced a second-series W108/W109 in 1967 which saw the original 2.5 litre mainstay straight six engine enlarged to 2.8 litres, with the model nomenclatures altered to match, though otherwise the changes were minor. Offering effortless performance, the 280 SE was usually equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission using a fluid flywheel, but a small number were sold with the four-speed manual.
